Outstanding opportunity for a Teacher of the Visually Impaired to serve New Mexico students with specialized educational needs! Provide expert instruction and support that enables students with visual impairments to achieve academic goals and develop skills for lifelong independence.
Deliver specialized educational services to students with varying degrees of visual impairment including total blindness, functional vision, and students with multiple disabilities. Your expertise will ensure students receive appropriate instruction in unique skill areas while maintaining access to grade-level academic content.
Work across diverse educational environments serving students from preschool through adult transition programs. Provide individualized instruction that addresses each student's specific visual condition, learning preferences, and educational goals while promoting self-advocacy and independence.
Conduct comprehensive evaluations including functional vision assessments and learning media assessments to determine appropriate instructional approaches and assistive technology needs. Develop individualized education plans incorporating expanded core curriculum goals and vision-related objectives.
Provide direct instruction in compensatory skills including braille literacy, assistive technology proficiency, orientation and mobility concepts, and independent living techniques. Train students in the use of specialized equipment including screen readers, magnification devices, and refreshable braille displays.
Collaborate with general education teachers to adapt curriculum materials and implement accommodations that ensure student access to educational content. Provide consultation and training to school staff regarding visual impairment characteristics and effective instructional strategies.
Graduate degree in Visual Impairment Education or related special education discipline from regionally accredited institution. Current New Mexico teaching license with Visual Impairment endorsement or certification. Minimum two years of professional experience serving students with visual impairments in educational settings.
Demonstrated competency in braille reading and writing including literary braille and technical notation systems. Knowledge of assistive technology applications and devices for students with visual impairments. Understanding of eye conditions, visual development, and functional vision assessment.
Excellent instructional planning and assessment capabilities. Strong communication and collaboration skills for working with multidisciplinary teams. Professional ethics and commitment to maintaining student confidentiality and dignity.
Additional certification in related areas such as orientation and mobility instruction or deaf-blind education. Experience working with students having visual impairments and additional disabilities or complex medical needs. Training in emerging assistive technologies and innovative instructional methods.
Knowledge of transition services and vocational preparation for students with visual impairments. Professional development in areas such as positive behavior support or trauma-informed practices. Experience serving culturally and linguistically diverse student populations.
